There is strong evidence that pregnant women who smoke cigarettes are thereby increasing the risk of death of their babies, a Public Health Service report said. The report contains the strongest statement on the risks of smoking in pregnancy ever made by the Public Health Service. "Numerous retrospective and prospective studies have revealed a statistically significant relationship between cigarette smoking and an elevated mortality risk among the infants of smokers," says the report.

The document also raised doubts concerning the safety of the little cigars that have become increasingly popular. Many people can inhale these much as they do cigarettes, the Public Health Service reported, and those who do will probably face increased risks of the lung and heart problems that have been linked to cigarette smoking. Smokers of pipes and large cigars were told they face some health risks too, but the report made its strongest attack against cigarettes and was particularly strong concerning the risks in pregnancy.

It said several lines of evidence were accumulating to show "a strong, probably casual association between cigarette smoking and higher late fetal and infant mortality among smokers' infants." Basically, that means still-births and deaths during the first few days of life.

The pediatrician who wrote that section of the report noted that the number was roughly equal to two-thirds of all the deaths from accidents in Americans aged one to 14. Prematurity - meaning birth before full development - involves a strong risk. Therefore, the report argues, a premature baby of a nonsmoking mother may sometimes be at greater risk than a small, but mature baby of a smoking mother, but this does not invalidate the case against smoking. Why are they called 'Manila' envelopes?

or a few years now, I've wondered why some envelopes are called Manila (or manilla) ones. Initially I thought it might have been that, like Champagne and Melton Mowbray pork pies, manilla envelopes had to be made in Manila to be 'official'. But, after a bit of digging, I've found out that's not the case. Apparently it's because Manila envelopes were originally made out of Manila hemp. (Though they're not necessarily made from it now.)

Before certain types of readers start getting excited, I should point out that 'hemp' is a misnomer.   Instead, Manilla envelopes were made from a fibre that came from the 'abaca', a relative of the banana, of which the Philippines is the world's largest producer. (And, just in case, Manila is the capital of the country.)

While all this is news to me, the United Nations has known about it for a while. In 1989 the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization released a report called – and excuse me while I take a deep breath – 'Impact of changing technological and economic factors on markets for natural industrial fibres'. Phew!

The report says that 'For many years abaca has been used in paper-making mixed with wood pulps in order to increase the strength of certain final products and at the same time to reduce their weight, e.g. manilla envelopes.' It goes on to say that 'Special papers with high tear and tensile strength [their emphasis] such as currency paper, light weight onion skin paper, dust filter papers, packaging tape and some cigarette papers are also made with abaca pulps.'

Is Nicotine Water Legal?

Is nicotine water products (like NIC Lite, Nico water, etc.) legal in the United States? I recently (as in almost a year ago) quit smoking cigarettes. Nicotine water products...are NOT what is used in an electronic cig, they use e-liquid or e-juice which is made with PG and/VG with food flavoring. No offense if you knew that.

From a quick look it seems the Nic water, is not illegal Yet...but I'd bet it will be. It's very very prone to accidents(like a toddler taking a sip)

The supreme court said that ecigs were to be classified a tobacco product...and outside the FDA's jurisdiction. There are a few states trying to pass laws making it illegal to sell ecigs to minors...but that shouldnt effect users of ecigs anyway.

Clove Cigarettes vs Regular Cigarettes?

I understand that cloves have less tobacco (60-70%), dont usually have filters, burn slower and are stronger than regular cigarettes BUT is the tobacco used better than the tobacco in regular cigarettes i.e. have less added chemicals? The importers, Smoking Everywhere Inc. and Sottera Inc., had argued that the FDA lacked the authority to do so because of a 2000 Supreme Court ruling that the FDA lacked the power to regulate cigarettes and tobacco as drugs or devices.
The lower court judge, Richard J. Leon of the U.S. District Court in Washington, granted a preliminary injunction last month barring the FDA from stopping e-cigarette imports.
Leon said he did not see an immediate threat to public health from the e-cigarettes.
In appealing Leon's injunction, the FDA noted that nicotine is addictive and toxic.
The agency also said that last year's federal law giving it the power to regulate tobacco products did not prevent it from regulating drug devices that deliver nicotine.
A panel of three appeals court judges temporarily stayed the lower court ruling in order to give them more time to consider the FDA's arguments that it should overturn Leon's injunction.

Who here thinks the FDA should ban electronic cigarettes?

I mean, it hasnt even been proven to be safe and there are still chemicals in them that shouldnt be inhaled! Its made to look like a cigarette, it looks cool and could be attracting kids and it has nicotine in it. it comes with so many flavors like chocolate, french toast, caramel which could be attracting even more kids. Its a drug and is sold no regulations. It contains carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze.

The FDA has more power than any agency should have. Individuals should be given information in layman's terms, so they can make their own decisions.
