Recollections of the Early Days of Aikido in Great Britain

In 1957, I was studying Judo and Karate at the Abbe School of Budo at the "Hut" in Hillingdon, Middlesex, a suburb of London. My teacher was Ken Williams Sensei, and we were all students of Kenshiro Abbe Sensei (8th dan in Judo, 6th dan in Aikido, and 5th dan in Karate and Kendo). At that time, very few people in the United Kingdom had heard of Aikido.

Around 1957, Abbe Sensei told Mr Williams that he had recieved a letter from O-Sensei saying that instuctors outside of Japan had permission to teach Aikido to anyone who wished to learn it. Mr Williams was Abbe Sensei's first Aikido student. Eventually, Abbe Sensei made Mr Williams National Coach for Aikido, and I became Mr Williams assistant - which I remained for approximately 15 years.

Abbe Sensei's Aikido was the prewar style of Aiki-Jutsu, which was very physical. Both Abbe Sensei and Williams Sensei were excellent teachers, who worked very hard to train us while promoting Aikido to an initially unreceptive public. Abbe Sensei and Williams brought eight of us up to 1st dan. At the time, we were the only dan grades in Great Britain, and we were all in one dojo. Sunday morning practice was for dan grades only. Williams Sensei would lock the doors to the dojo, and the real serious practice would start. Williams Sensei would allow the younger dan grades to try and prove themselves against him, but they had no success.

Williams Sensei started to visit other dojos and to introduce Aikido. He was a highly respected Judo teacher, and this helped him to arrange visits to Judo clubs. Occasionally, a Judo instructor would allow a few students to practice Aikido in a corner of the mat.

In the early days, the training was extremely difficult with the emphasis on very strenuous exercise. My students and I used to train four or five nights a week as well as Sunday mornings. After running for several miles, we would return to the mat and perform 200 push-ups on the backs of our wrists, which we then followed with general practice and a further two hours of hard practice.

When I was graded 1st dan by Abbe Sensei, Williams Sensei instructed me to take a good student as an assistant. I chose a young man of 17 years of age by the name of Derek Eastman, who is now 3rd dan and Technical Director or our Basingstoke Headquarters. Mr Eastman is still a loyal friend after all these years.

When Mr Eastman reached 1st dan and I was 2nd dan, William Sensei advised us to travel and spread the word of Aikido. Both Mr Eastman and I gave up our jobs and travelled around the United Kingdom. It was very difficult to introduce Aikido, because most people had never heard of it.
Mr Eastman and I left home and headed for the Midlands without much money or hope. We would visit Judo and Katate clubs, sports centers, etc. In some areas, where Williams sensei had already introduced Aikido, we would find accommodation with the students, and we would get paid a small fee for teaching. Where there was no Aikido at all, we would take jobs for a few days to feed ourselves. In one area, we worked as assistants to a funeral director. We had to goto the morgue, collect the bodies. And take them upto the chapel. (Once the boss caught me in the chapel of rest with a young local maiden whom I was laying to rest - one who was alive and well. He was very angry.)

We also worked as road sweepers, wearing bowler hats which attracted a great deal of attention from the girls.

In the north of England, the girls loved to hear the London or southern accent, and this was a great help with invitations for dinner. But it was still a struggle to survive.

We also worked in steel factories and had many other jobs around the country. Without a doubt, the worst was repairing an old railway line. We called it the "railway of death." Needless to say, we did not stay on that job very long.

Still as I look back on life in Aikido, I think that this is was a really great time. As with all memories, we tend to forget the bad times and remember the good. We contributed greatly to the promotion of Aikido, and I do not regret one day of it.

Williams Sensei would send out all the Dan grades out to teach and to demonstrate in the hope that people would watch us and listen to us. Our teaching was free of charge, and this often enabled us to obtain free accommodation with the students. Although Williams Sensei was not a particularly religious man, I remember him saying, "You are my disciples, and now you must go out and teach the gospel of Aikido."

In the earley 60's, Williams Sensei called all the Dan grades together and said that he wanted us to attend the longest and most important seminar to date. It was to be held in Cardiff in Wales. The demonstrations and interviews were to be televised.
As usual, our accommodations were to be with local students. When we arrived at the Cardiff dojo - Williams Sensei and eight Dan grades - all the students crowded around saying, "Sensei, would you please stay with me?" One student politely took my arm and said, "Sensei I would be very pleased if you would stay with me at Sunnybank Farm." After living in London, I thought it would be a great treat for me to stay at the farm for the weekend.
The student and I drove for miles into the wilds of rural Wales, eventually arriving at a very remote farmhouse. The weather seemed very cold but dry.
I woke up the next morning at 5am with cocks crowing and the cows doing whatever cows do to create noise. After I shock my head and realized where I was, I looked out of the window. To my horror, I saw that the snow had fallen and drifted right up to the bedroom windows.
We were snowed in for three days until a neighbour from miles away dug us out with a mechanical digger. I missed the seminar and the television appearance. It was then that I resolved to stay a city boy.

When Abbe Sensei told us that he had invited a new teacher from Japan to visit us, we were all quite excited. We had never seen a Japanese Aikido master other then Abbe Sensei.
The new teacher was Nakazono Sensei (then 6th Dan). Abbe Sensei told us that Nakazono Sensei would teach us for two weeks. It was two weeks of hell. Nakazono Sensei had us practicing on the mat for three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon, and then the dan grades had to practice an additional three hours in the evening. During this seminar there were many broken bones and other injuries.
Abbe Sensei had taught us to be strong and not be thrown unless the technique was effective - that being strong showed respect for your teacher. He also taught ukes to attack on balance so as not make the throw to easy. As he taught, Abbe Sensei would hit us with a shinai and explain that, while his English was not very good, the shinai spoke English fluently. So, in those early years, that was what we knew - the strong fighting art of Aikido
At first, when Nakazono Sensei saw how we practiced, he was angry with us and perplexed. He did not understand. But, at the end of the seminar, Abbe Sensei explained why we were the way we were. Then Nakazono Sensei realized that we were genuine students with great respect for him and a strong desire to learn.
In England, after a hard practice, it is traditional to finish the evening off with a pint of beer at the local pub. But Nakazono Sensei was keeping us on the mat until 10pm, and the pubs closed at 10:30pm. So Williams Sensei said to me, "Ellis, as my assistant, it is your duty to ask Sensei if we can leave the mat at 9pm so we can have time to get to the pub." I asked Nakazono Sensei (what a fool I was!), and he became angry. He said that he had travelled across the world to teach us Aikido and that all we wanted to do was go to the pub. What he didn't seem to understand was that this was our vacation from work. (I reminded Nakazono Sensei of this incident when we met later in Santa Fe, and we were able to laugh about it.)

In 1963, I was Nakazono Sansei's assistant at a national martial arts demonstration at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That was a proud moment for me, and also for my parents, as this was the first they had ever seen me in a Aikido demonstration.

There was a vast difference between Abbe Sensei's old style Aikido and Nakazono Sensei's new style, which was far more flowing. The new way seemed so much softer and yet very strong.
We quickly adapted to this new style. Then Abbe Sensei dropped a "bombshell" on us: we would all have to be regraded to meet the current standards of Hombu Dojo. The grading was physical and mentally demanding. At its end, Abbe Sensei lined all the eight Dan grades up and said that he accepted our ranks - with the exception of one. He looked at that one for a timeless moment and said, "Necessary sell your gi while price is high." Even after 37 years, I have not forgotten that sentence. Abbe Sensei took away that students rank.

In the early 1960's I was asked to conduct an Aikido demonstration at the British Judo Council's National Judo Championships in London. Among the VIPs in attendance were the Japanese Ambassador and Lady Baden Powell, the wife of Lord Baden Powell, who was then the head of the World Organization of Boy Scouts. Kenshiro Abbe and Otani Sensei emphasized how important this evening was and that they wanted an impressive display from the Aikido people.
While we were waiting to go on, a Judo man came up to Otani Sensei who was speaking to the Japanese Ambassador, and said, "Hey, Smiler." I couldn't believe the disrespect, and took the man to one side. We were having a confrontation when Derek Eastman, who was outside smoking a cigarette, told me that we were due on stage immediately. We rushed onto the stage.
As I performed the first technique, Mr.Eastman's cigarettes and matches fell out of his gi onto the stage. I was already upset from the incident with the Judo man, and now the embarrassment! I smashed Mr Eastman all over the tatami and back again.
Later, when we were doing a knife technique with a live blade the knife went through my gi and I felt the cold blade against my stomach. I thought, "My God, it's in me!" I dropped onto my knees with Mr Eastman in an immobilization, and I looked down at the front row. Looking up at me with shock and horror was her Ladyship. I knew by the look on her face that any hopes we had of her sponsoring Aikido were over.
After the display, her Ladyship said, "That was the most horrific display of violence I have ever witnessed."
The Japanese Ambassador congratulated us on a excellent demonstration. (On inspection, I realized that the blade had only grazed me.)

Abbe Sensei brought over from Paris a young 5th Dan, Noro Sensei - the first sensei we had seen in a white hakama. Noro Sensei was perhaps the most graceful of all the teachers I have ever seen to date.
There then followed many other teachers: Tada Sensei, Hishomura Sensei, Tadashi Abbe Sensei, Tamura Sensei and Chiba Sensei. I was with Chiba Sensei for several years.

Chiba Sensei and I taught Aikido in a dojo at The Times newspaper in London. We were asked to take part in a 30-minute broadcast on the BBC world radio. Sensei asked me to do all the talking because, at the time his English was not very good. A television producer who had heard the broadcast asked if we would do a demonstration on Anglican TV. We agreed.
While we were waiting for our slot on TV, we were taken to a hospitality room, where the had just about any drink you can imagine. The hostess asked if we would like drinks. I thought a Jim Beam would go down well, and I said, "Sensei can we have a drink?" "Yes," he replied, but before I could order my Jim Beam he ordered two orange juices.

Some of the Aikido I have seen in recent years depresses me because it can only be done by two Aikidoists who practice together on a regular basis - like a pair of dancers who know each others moves. But Chiba Sensei's style of Aikido is effective. If I wanted Yoga, I would study; if I wanted dance, I would take dancing lessons. I believe that Aikido not only has to look good, but also be effective.

Once I had to go to see Abbe Sensei at his apartment in Acton, London. (He shared a house with Otani Sensei, a 7th Dan in Judo, and his son Tomio Otani, a good friend of mine who was the national coach for Kendo.)
The house was like a martial arts museum with suits of armor, swords, and other weapons scattered around.

From childhood, athletics has been one of my great loves. But the one sport I cannot watch is our English game of cricket. So you can imagine my disappointment when I came to the house and found Abbe Sensei, Whom I viewed almost like a god, watching the cricket, "The World Series." The windows were open, and small birds and pigeons were flying around the room.
Carefully choosing my words, I said, "Sensei, I didn't realize that you liked cricket."
"I don't," he said. "I watch this boring, stupid game every day, and still don't understand it."
He then said something very true: "They call it the World Series, but it is only played in countries that Britain conquered."

Eventually, Williams Sensei, whom I believe to the best Aikidoist the United Kingdom has ever produced, began studying Ki Aikido with Tohei Sensei while a group to while I belong remained traditional.

Williams Sensei strictly controlled Aikido in the United Kingdom for approximately 15 years. No one would start a dojo or take a seminar without consulting with him first. But Aikido has now grown far beyond our early expectations, and many factors have broken up the special unit of dan grades that once existed.

I was not politically minded in the old days, and I have not changed. Sometimes students telephone me and ask what style I practiceor what organization I belong to. Before they tell me their allegiance, I just say, "if you practice Aikido, you are more than welcome to attend our dojo."

On my next visit to the US, I hope to visit Alaska. The secretary of the Ellis School of Traditional Aikido (ESTA) in Alamogordo, Mrs. Aida Prazak, has moved to North Pole in Alaska, with her husband, who is a captain in the United States Air Force, and she hopes to open an Aikido school in the area in the near future.
Whan I was last in the United States, I taught in New Mexico at the El Paso University, where I recieved a very warm welcome. I also taught at Roswell Military Academy and Holloman Air Force Base.
When I last saw Nakazono Sensei he asked, "What are you doing now?" I told him how things were. He said, "Henry, you think you are only 20 years of age. You should slow down. You are a old man." But, if I refrain from looking in the mirror, I can go on pretending I am a young man in heart and mind - thanks to a lifetime of Aikido.

Over the years many people have begun using snuff, chew, or other forms of smokeless tobacco under the mistaken belief that they are less dangerous than cigarettes and cigars. Inspire yourself. The first few days of withdrawal will be very difficult; try to keep your spirits up by surrounding yourself with pictures, quotes, or even people who you find inspiring. The good news is that after the initial few days are over, you may not need any more than a mirror to find motivation. Some of the benefits of quitting - better breath, more attractive teeth - begin to show very quickly after quitting. If you are ever tempted to start again, just glance at your fresh new smile in the mirror.

Combine treatments. Any kind of addiction has two components, physical and mental. Patches or medications may help you with physical withdrawal symptoms but will not address the psychological issues contributing to your habit, and vice versa. Medications or patches combined with support groups or therapy can be very helpful.

A question relating to dipping tobacco?

Alright guys, I have a question for yous. Lately I have been wondering some things, first, i gave up smoking and have been dipping tobacco (copenhagen) But I plan to quit this soon, as I hear this is even more of an addiction than cigarettes (and they were rough to put down) So my question is, If I can break the addiction, is it okay if I buy a can on occasion, say, maybe one can during deer season, and maybe one on a fishing trip here and there? Speaking in a non habit forming manner now. Theres just something about smokeless tobacco that pairs well with outdoor activitys, Thanks guys. And dont respond saying "its habit forming" as is any tobacco product, im speaking strictly here about maybe 2 cans per year, Thanks!

When the environment kills: Can living in a cancer cluster raise your insurance rates?

Medical studies bombard us with information about the risks associated with cancer. It would seem that very little can be done to escape this deadly killer. Cancer-causing carcinogens can be found in our homes and where we work — even at the doctor's office. They naturally occur outside and can be found in the air that we breathe and the water that we drink. While several factors play into the risk of developing cancer, our environment is key.

Cancer is the growth and mutation of abnormal cells in the body—the result of carcinogenesis, or toxins that attach to DNA and develop into tumors.

This year, nearly 562,340 Americans will die from cancer. It's the second most common cause of death in the United States, accounting for one in every four deaths, according to latest statistics by the American Cancer Society.

The National Toxicology Program, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, published a list of environmental carcinogens that have been implicated as causes of cancer. You may find a few surprising.

1. ETHANOL and PLANTS

Alcohol: This one may be a no-brainer, but heavy consumption of alcohol is related to cancers in the mouth, pharynx, larynx and esophagus -- in addition to liver and breast cancer. Known contaminates that are absorbed during the production of alcoholic beverages include acetaldehyde, nitrosamines, aflatoxins, urethane, asbestos and arsenic compounds.

Tobacco:Tobacco tops all categories of the single most lethal carcinogen worldwide.Chronic tobacco use can be responsible for cancers in the lungs, larynx, mouth, esophagus, bladder, kidney, throat, stomach, pancreas and cervix. There's also an increased risk of developing leukemia. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco contain 60 compounds that are carcinogenic to humans, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. People who breathe second-hand smoke can be affected as well.

2. MOLD and FUNGAL TOXINS

Aflatoxin: We come into contact with aflatoxin, which is known to cause liver cancer, primarily through eating contaminated food. This carcinogen produces a fungus that thrives on corn, grains, peanuts, tree nuts and cottonseed meal. Cottonseed meal is often fed to farm animals.

3. DIOXINS

Benzene: Exposure to benzene can put you at risk for leukemia. You can be exposed to it by something as simple as driving in congested traffic -- or pumping gas. The Texas Transportation Institute reported that Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Atlanta were cities with the highest amount of traffic congestion in 2007.

"People are at risk for exposure to benzene when waiting in traffic," says Vivi Abrams, spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Environmental Health. "As far as what levels they are exposed to, that's something that more research needs to be done about. The seriousness would depend on the amount, the root cause, the length of the exposure in the air, the levels in the air at that time and the person's pre-existing health conditions."

Manufacturing facilities also expose you to benzene and traces of this carcinogen are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy products, eggs and fish. But the most common exposure to benzene is through cigarette smoke, says Abrams.

In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration analyzed more than 100 soft drinks to determine the level of benzene found in those products, they learned that eight of the beverages tested contained levels of benzene that exceeded the federal standard for tap and bottled water of five parts per billion (ppb). Some of the soft drinks that were found to have the highest benzene count included Safeway Select Diet Orange, Crush Pineapple, AquaCal Strawberry flavored water, and Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange. The FDA asked manufactures with the highest levels to reformulate its products in order to reduce the benzene count.

4. PESTICIDES

Arsenic: Exposure to arsenic is linked to an assortment of cancers, including skin, lung, digestive tract, liver, bladder and kidney. This carcinogen can appear in our food and drinking water. Seafood, rice, rice cereal, mushrooms and poultry contain the highest levels of arsenic.

Drinking water can be contaminated with pesticides that contain arsenic. This can come from natural mineral deposits of inorganic arsenic or from chemical plants that haven't properly disposed of the compound.

Arsenic is used to pigment paint and can be contracted through the hands, fingernails, cups, cigarette smoking or by holding paintbrushes in the mouth.

5. FIBROUS MINERALS

Asbestos: Exposure to asbestos has been linked to lung cancer and mesothelioma. It has been detected in air, soil, drinking water, food, medicines and vehicle break linings.

Silica, crystalline: Linked to lung cancer, silica is a common air contaminant. People who live near sand and gravel operations are at the most risk. People are also exposed to silica via abrasives, sand paper, detergent, cement and grouts.

6. HEAVY METALS

Beryllium: Linked to lung cancer, beryllium can be contracted by inhaling dust or fumes or ingested with water and food. It is also found in fruit and fruit juices, primarily pineapple and papaya juice.

Certain occupations can expose you to this carcinogen: alloy makers, ceramics workers, missile technicians, nuclear reactor workers, electronic-equipment workers and jewelers.

Radon:Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is a natural occurring element in the environment, but it is also deadly. Exposure to radon has been linked to lung cancer in several epidemiological studies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that one in 15 homes have elevated radon levels in the United States. This gas can also be found in groundwater, soil or building materials. There have also been significant levels of radon found in tunnels, power stations, caves, public baths and spas. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the American Lung Association.

Since radon gas is so prevalent, you may wonder if your home insurance rates will increase if your home has elevated levels of radon. Holly Anderson, spokesperson for State Farm, says it's not a factor.

"We don't ask about radon in the underwriting process, so it's unlikely that it will affect a homeowners policy or its eligibility," says Anderson.

Underwriters use a number of tools to determine the cost of life insurance, but according to Kim McKeown, spokesperson for the Society of Actuaries (SOA), group insurers may look at overall mortality by geographical region, but it's unlikely that they will single out incidents of cancer based on environmental factors.

Life insurance companies look at a number of medical conditions and other factors when they price life insurance applications. According to McKeown, someone living in a known cancer cluster cannot be excluded from getting life insurance or be charged more for a policy.

"Individual life insurance applicants with cancer are underwritten on an individual by individual basis," says McKeown. "Life underwriters are not allowed to price individual life premiums based on cancer clusters."

The American Cancer Society reports that there are at least 100 suspected cancer clusters in the United States. The National Cancer Institute loosely defines a cancer cluster as an abnormally high number of cancers diagnosed in a small geographic area over a period of time. Those clusters often produce rare cancers or occur in people who generally shouldn't be subject to cancer -- like children.

Tips on How to Quit Smoking

You do not need an expert to tell you that cigarette smoking is harmful to human health. And even if that is a universal fact, many people continue to smoke while tobacco companies rake in millions if not billions of dollars in revenues and profits.

Lung and throat cancer, tuberculosis, asthma, bronchitis and weakening of the immune system are among the many diseases and ailments smoking inflicts on our body. Smoking can also compromise sexual performance.

But there is good news - you can quit smoking. And you better quit smoking before it is too late, or when the smoking-related disease is hard to cure or irreversible.

While many doctors believe that the damage caused to the body by heavy smoking (at least one pack a day) will take months or even years to reverse, it is still worth it to save your body from further damage.

Many smokers have tried to quit smoking by abruptly stopping their habit immediately, only to go back to their habit one or two days later. Better to quit smoking gradually. Before we go to the steps on how to gradually quit smoking, it is very important that the decision to quit be made from the start. Otherwise, everything will be futile.

To strengthen your willpower, build up the motivation deep inside to rebuild your health, and enjoy life more. Or even to save money.

We recommend these steps:

1.) Reduce the number of cigarettes per day - going from a pack a day to ten per day then to five per day is easier compared to going from a pack a day to nil. Eventually, you have to go from one a few sticks (less than five per day).

When you reach the phase where you smoke less than half a pack a day, try to discard that cigarette when it is consumed halfway. And it will only be matter of time when you can go less than five sticks per day to one or two, then to zero.

2.) Set a no-smoking day - a weekend would be fine, since this is the time you are away from work (where there is much tension and stress that force many people to smoke). However, do not remain idle, since idleness also encourages smoking. Better to keep busy with leisure activities or your family. Just don't remain idle.

3.) Calculate your savings - calculate how much you are saving from reducing the number of sticks you are not burning. As your savings pile up, you should build up more motivation to quit smoking.

4.) Eat snacks - a few psychologists link smoking to an oral need, and smoking is one of the many ways to satisfy that oral need. So if you feel like eating a snack or two in between meals just satisfy that oral need, then go ahead! Gaining some weight is better off than destroying your body. Besides, you can shave that weight later (more on that).

5.) Practice meditation - tension (from one's job and what have you) is one of the many factors causing people to smoke. To better deal with tension, start practice meditation.

If you can't attend those meditation classes, try one of these many CDs offered in the internet that helps achieve meditative states (a more relaxed yet active state of mind) that can help people better deal with tension and stress.

6.) Go out an enjoy the fresh air - as the number of sticks you smoke goes down to less than five of which you discard halfway, try trekking to the outdoors where you can enjoy nature and lots of fresh air. And start thinking: this is the type of air you want to get into your lungs (and not toxic smoke from cigarettes).

7.) Educate yourself - start or continue reading and educating yourself about the dangers of smoking. The more knowledge you accumulate on the subject matter, your will to quit will become stronger.

8.) Be aware of withdrawal symptoms and tolerate them - irritability, lacking focus or concentration and the craving to eat snacks and junk food are just some of the withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. Better to know more about them than to guess to yourself as to what is happening to you. Anyway, many of the symptoms eventually disappear as you adopt a smoke-free attitude.

Using nicotine patches can also help, but quitting without using such is possible. Once you are no longer a smoker, try enrolling in a vigorous exercise program (with your physician's clearance) and watch how your body and endurance becomes stronger. For sure, you won't want to smoke anymore once you see your body getting stronger.

how important is it for a 21 year old diabetic to quit cigarettes?

my best friend discovered he's got diabetes (type 1) yesterday. he's 6'3" tall and wieghs 115 kilos. he's been an avid cigarette smoker for the last 4 years and as of today, he smokes anything between 7 to 10 cigarettes a day. I know i have to get him to quit, but i don't think quitting instantaneously will be possible. what should i do? get him to come down to a cigarette or 2 in a day first and then gradually kick it or abandon asap because of his diabetic condition? How is it that I can smoke so much during the weekend but I can go all week and not smoke any? ?

HOW DO I QUIT SMOKING CIGARETTES?

I've been extremely anxious about quitting cigarettes. I have tried what it feels like 100 times. Just This year alone, I've tried quitting cold turkey 20 times....
Recently i bought gum and lozenges..

So i have an E-cig. Excellent condition with charger, case and extra tips. i would like to get atleast $90 or so for it. Where can i sell it? I cant sell on ebay because of the limitations torwards the item.

craigslist is probably not a bad idea but getting 90$ for it is unlikely cause they degrade with use and you can get brand new ones for as little as 40$ for a entire starter kit. You best bet is to smoke it in a bar and someone will for sure ask you about it and tell them your looking to part with that one and see if they want to buy it at a cheap price. I sold one of mine that way.

The Kings Inn in Mill Hill, Blackburn is making history by becoming the world's first vaping pub. The pub has partnered with The Electronic Cigarette Company and Totally Wicked E-Liquid to bring vaping into the pubs.

The Electronic Cigarette, or e-cig as they are commonly called, has gained popularity over the last two years with many smokers preferring the electronic device to their traditional cigarettes. Because of the way that they work, E Cigs are not affected by the smoking ban which was introduced to the UK in October 2007. The smoking ban has resulted in a severe, steady fall in trade in an already struggling market, with as many as 2,365 pubs closing in 2009 alone, leaving 24,000 people unemployed. TECC and Totally Wicked are hoping that the Electronic Cigarette will give the pub trade a much needed boost, and see the return of many locals who have chosen to smoke in their own home opposed to being shunted outside onto the pavement.

The Kings Inn is a family run establishment operating under new management. Landlady Jane Healy and daughter Roxanne have high hopes for the world's first ‘Vaping Pub'. Although there are many establishments that already allow the use of electronic cigarettes, the Kings Inn is the first to rent out electronic cigarettes, as well as sell them.  I thought it would be a good investment for both my wallet and my Health, best part of all is it only took 2 days to reach me as their fast delivery standards have yet to fail me.

I opened the product and found a set of easy to follow intructions on use of the E-Cig including the car charger, desk charger, USB charger...i could go on but now its for the moment of truth...Does it work?

My answer is a resounding yes, as soon as the product arrived I quit smoking cold turkey and have not had the craving for a cigarette for 8 months now! Whats even better is I use my ENI to smoke in public places where real cigarettes are banned indoors, these are not classed as a tobacco product therefore it can legally be used indoors anywhere, even on planes!

WOMEN ENPOWERMENT - TYPES AND WAYS

Women constitute more than 50% of the population, undertake most of the work (two thirds) but only receive one tenth of the total income rather than men.  The working hours of women are longer than that of men, often 12-16 hours per day.  In addition to their domestic responsibilities in child care, women have to be responsible for housework, such as fetching firewood, water and cooking and even hard work as ploughing and raking, planting, transplanting and harvesting.  Women have to suffer from continuing under nutrition and two thirds of them are anemic.  Rural women lack sex education and have poor health due to frequent pregnancies.  The illiterate women especially lack of information on balanced diet, family planning, house cleaning and other information to improve their health and the quality of life.  They have lower status and low paid occupations, lower economic positions so they are less conscious and lack self-confidence.  They have a few books and a little time to read so they can not appreciate the benefits of reading and have no motivation for reading.

The term “empowerment” has become one of the most widely used development terms.  Women’s groups, non-governmental development organizations, activists, politicians, governments and international agencies refer to empowerment as one of their goals.  Yet it is one of the least understood in terms of how it is to be measured or observed.  It is used precisely because this word has now been one of the fashionable concepts to include in policies/programmes/projects that there is a need to clarify and come up with tentative definitions. 

The Concept of Empowerment:

            Empowerment has become a widely used word.  In spheres as different as management and labor unions, health care and ecology, banking and education, empowerment also taking such place.  It is also a concept that does not merely concern personal identity but brings out a broader analysis of human rights and social justice.

The term empowerment has been emerged as a ‘development buzzword’.  After attempting a review of literature, Shetty (1992) comes to the conclusion that empowerment is easy to ‘intuit’ but complex to define.  An empowered individual would be one who experiences a sense of self-confidence and self-worth; a person who critically analyzes his/her social and political environment;  a person who is able to exercise control over decisions that affect his/her life”. An attempt is made in this paper to examine how a literacy campaign has brought about women’s empowerment. The nature of empowerment renders it difficult to define.  On the one hand, it is often referred to as a goal for many development programmes/projects.  On the other hand, it can also be conceived as a process that people undergo, which eventually leads to changes.  Nelly Stromquist, for instance, defines empowerment as “a process to change the distribution of power both in interpersonal relations and in institutions through out society” while Lucy Lazo describes it as “a process of acquiring, providing, bestowing the resources and the means or enabling the access to a control over such means and resources”.

According to Namtip Aksornkool “It is a process in which women gain control over their own lives by knowing and claiming their rights at all levels of society at the international, local, and household levels.  Self-empowerment means that women gain autonomy, are able to set their own agenda and are fully involved in the economic, political and social decision-making process.”

According to Ms.Lazo  empowerment is a moving state; it is continuum that varies in degree of power.  It is relative. One can move from an extreme state of absolute lack of power to the other extreme of having absolute power.” Empowerment can have six components: Cognitive, Psychological, Economic, Political, Social and Legal.

According to Ms.Stromquist, the Cognitive Component would include the ‘women are understanding of their conditions of subordination and the causes of such conditions at both micro and macro levels of society.  It involves acquiring new knowledge to create a different understanding of gender relations as well as destroying old beliefs that structure powerful gender ideologies”.

            The Psychological Component, on the other hand, would include the “development of feelings that women can act upon to improve their condition.  This means formation of the belief that they can succeed in change efforts.”

According to him the Economic Component “requires that women can be able to engage in a productive activity that will allow them some degree of autonomy, no matter how small and hard to obtain at the beginning”. Education is considered one of the most important means to empower women with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to participate fully in development processes.

The Political Component would encompass the “ability to organize and mobilize for change.  Consequently, an empowerment process must involve not only individual awareness but collective awareness and collective action.  The notion of collective action is fundamental to the aim of attaining social transformation” (Stromquist). In past women role in politics is mere but know the scenario is different a good percentage i.e nearly above 33% are participating. Encouraging them to participate in community programmes, Integration of women in the general national development plan, Allotting them good portfolio’s like education, health, sanitary that motivates them to do good practices, All family members, society, environment etc., should be support full, If all the trees were one tree, what a great tree it would be;  It is clear that women can be empowered individually, the feminist vision is one where women are able to articulate a collective voice and demonstrate collective strength. It was also stressed that incorporating the feminist perspective in the concept of empowerment implies a long-term re-designing of societies that will be based on democratic relationships.  According to Ms.Dighe talks about empowerment as dealing with strategic rather than practical gender needs.

Social Empowerment  It  is a “ process to change the distribution of power in interpersonal relations among different people, cultures, activities of the society”. In past awareness regarding the society is unknown to the women but present scenario reveals completely different pictures and knows they are equally participating in all activities of the society. Best references are our present President is Mrs. Pratibha Patil. U.S. foreign secretary a women, Hillary Clinton.  All efforts must be mobilized to enabling at least the next generation to be genuinely literate to empower socially. Encouraging traditional women organizations.

Talking about Legal Empowerment; Protection is needed for the women in terms of health, harassments, superstitions, cultural barriers etc., Child marriages, satisahgamana are some of the oldest traditions, which are the basic barriers for the girls development. But now there are no such rubbish traditions to be in practice. Best reference is latest women gruhahimsa crime results in lessening the harassments on women.  Make them aware of the civil rights, Exercising the legal rights when ever necessary, Preparing and canvassing the documents regarding the legal freedom for women, Providing good literary programmes regarding the legal empowerment.

Indicators of Empowerment:

Understanding that empowerment is a complex issue with varying interpretations in different societal, national and cultural contexts, there is some listing of indicators.

At the level of woman and her Household :

• Participation in crucial decision-making processes;
• Extent of sharing of domestic work by men;
• feeling and expression of pride and value in her work;
• Self-confidence and self-esteem; and
• Ability to prevent violence.

At the Community / Organizational level; the indicators are –

• Existence of women’s organizations;
• Allocation of funds to women and women’s projects;
• Increased number of women leaders at village, district, state and national levels;
• Involvement of women in the design, development and application of technology;
• Participation in community programmes, productive enterprises, politics and arts;
• Involvement of women in non-traditional tasks;
• Increased training programmes for women; and
• Exercising her legal rights when necessary;

At the National level; the indicators are –

• Awareness of her social and political rights;
• Integration of women in the general national development plan;
• Existence of women’s networks and publications; and
• The degree to which the media take on women’s issues.

Facilitating and Constraining Factors of Empowerment :

Empowerment does not take place in a vacuum.  In the same way that Ms.Lazo talks about women’s state of powerlessness as a result of “a combination and interaction of environmental factors.

Facilitating factors for Women Empowerment :

v  Existence of women’s organizations;

v  Availability of support systems for women;

v  Availability of women-specific data and other relevant information;

v  Availability of funds

v  Feminist leadership;

v  Networking;

v  Favorable media coverage;

v  Favorable policy climate.

Constraining Factors  for Women Empowerment :

     Heavy work load of women;

     Isolation of women from each other;.

     Illiteracy;

     Traditional views that limit women’s participation;

     No funds;

     Internal strife/militarization/wars;

     Disagreements/conflicts among women’s groups;

     Structural adjustment policies;

     Discriminatory policy environment;

     Negative and sensational coverage of media.

Strategies for the Future :

            Empowerment through education is ideally seen as a continuous holistic process with Cognitive, Psychological, Economic, Social, Legal and Political dimensions in order to achieve emancipation.  Given the complexity of political, societal and international interrelations, one has to systematically think about the strategies and concrete proposals for future action. Women Empowerment is possible with the below factors –

a)    Education :

The formal and non-formal education systems would need to be considered.  It would be important to analyze the gender content and to ascertain the manner in which it is addressed/not addressed in the educational system.  On the basis of the analysis, curriculum changes would need to be brought about.  Likewise it would be important to reorient the teachers on gender issues so that overall gender sensitization in the educational system could be brought about. In concrete terms, this would mean ;

Reorienting and re-educating policy makers;

• Securing equal access for boys and girls in education;                      
• Holding workshops/seminars for teachers
• Revising teaching materials;
• Producing materials in local languages;
• Implementing special programmes for women in the field of Adult Education;
• Incorporating issues such as tradition, race, ethnicity, gender sensitization, urban and
• Rural contexts in the programmes;
• Raising awareness on the necessity for health care;
• To show them how macro level mismanagement is responsible for their loss of jobs
• Focusing on parents as role models

It was also necessary to clarify the goals of women’s education.  The some more important objectives before us are:

      To eliminate illiteracy;

      To develop self-esteem and self-confidence;

      To have knowledge about their bodies and sexuality;

      To have the ability to make their own decisions and negotiate;

      To raise the women’s awareness of their civil rights;

      To provide skills for income generation;

      To make participation in community/society more effective; and

      To prepare them to be good women leaders.

b) Research/Documentation :

The importance of doing participatory and action research was underscored.  It was considered important to organize workshops to train grass-roots women to conduct participatory research where they could develop skills to critically analyze their existing conditions.  This will facilitate their organizing for collective action.

Research as a strategy would therefore entitle:

É       Disseminating information;

É       Producing and disseminating information leaflets regarding women’s rights;

É       Referring to women in all national and International statistics;

É       Collecting oral history of women;

É       Documenting and analyzing successful and failed progrmmes of the women’s movements;

É       Collecting cross-cultural caste studies

É       Constantly evaluating research; and

É       .Involving women as agents (instead of objects) of research

c) Campaigns :

If one is to have an effect in society, it is important to undertake campaign and lobby activities that will put the issue of gender in the minds of the legislators, policy-makers and the large public.  This will therefore mean:

      Pushing for a dialogue between stake holders;

      Raising gender issues within the national policy arena;

      Pressuring to upgrade women’s bureaus into  ministries of women’s affairs;

      Lobbying for sex-equity and affirmative action legislation;

      Lobbying for “counter structural adjustment policies”;

      Organizing pressure groups (like “Greenpeace”);

      Securing access to information;

      Demanding child care centers; and

      Producing video and CDs, T-Shirts etc.

d)  Networking :

            Through networking, it would be possible to share experiences and learn from one another.  In this manner, understanding and solidarity among women’s organizations, development organizations (governmental/non-government) and multilateral agencies could be forged.

v  Organizing at least one meeting  year of gender sensitive organizations;

v  Bringing together donor agencies, governments and NGOs;

v  Setting up a south-south cooperation and exchange;

v  Linking women’s movements all over the world;

v  Establishing alternative credit schemes that offer women access to funds.

e) Training :

In our societies, there is a gender division of labour which dictates the kind of training one acquires.  If one talks about women’s  empowerment, it is important that women have access to the different training opportunities previously denied them.  This therefore means:

• Preparing for jobs that are usually not open to them;
• Providing income-generating projects that are market-oriented;  and
• Training capable female leaders at all levels.

f) Media :

Now a days Media is playing vital and important role in the development of the society. Considering the attitudinal barriers in traditional societies and the role which the mass media play in reinforcing them, the following strategies were advanced:

v  Organizing mass media campaigns to raise awareness;

v  Creating a social climate friendly to women’s issues;

v  Resisting the tendency to send women back to the kitchen; and

v  Disseminating information about conferences that will take place in the coming years.

Finally, It was pointed out that one of the key determinants of successful programmes is the extent to which they had taken the multiple roles of women into account and how they helped in alleviating the burden.

These are the suggested components for Women Empowerment:

• Promotion of gender awareness                                             
• Lessons on health and nutrition;                                
• Integration of technical, entrepreneurial, cultural and communal aspects;
• Information and lessons on politics; and
• Provision of planning and thinking skills.

            Literacy is a tool that can help women and men understand themselves, their communities and society at large.  Literacy involves change because it offers possibilities of new ways of looking and doing things.  Crucial to education work are other complementary activities such as those in the areas of legal reform, transformation of international economic and political relations, action-oriented research and networking.  It was stressed that it is equally important to convince men that better education of women will be beneficial to the entire family and the society as a whole.

Which is bad for Your Health? Cigars vs. Cigarettes

Most everyone has heard about the health risks of smoking both cigars and cigarettes, and the dangers of secondhand smoke.  But which is worse?  Do cigar smokers really have the advantage over cigarettes smokers?  The answer is much more complicated than anyone ever thought.

A Matter of Degree

Research from the National Cancer Institute indicates that the health risks posed by both cigarettes and cigars are strongly linked to frequency of use.  That is, it's not whether you smoke cigarettes or cigars, but how much and how often you consume them.  Individuals who smoke cigarettes on a daily basis are at a greater risk of developing cancer than people who smoke the occasional cigar.  That said, evidence indicates that cigars contain many more carcinogens than cigarettes.  It also appears that cigar smoke is more toxic than cigarette secondhand smoke.  Much of this is due to the fact that cigars are bigger than cigarettes, and thus produce more smoke.  

To Inhale or Not?

Debate has also concentrated on the issue of inhaling nicotine from cigars and cigarettes.  Dedicated cigar enthusiasts argue that cigars are less dangerous than cigarettes because they don't require you to inhale as much toxins.  The National Cancer Institute's research indicates that both cigar and cigarette smokers are exposed to carcinogens, regardless of whether they inhale or not.  Even without inhaling, smokers are still exposing their mouths, tongues, larynxes, and throats to carcinogens.  In fact, simply holding an unlit cigar or cigarette between your lips can expose you to carcinogens.  Furthermore, when saliva comes in contact with a cigar or cigarette, even momentarily, carcinogens are swallowed.  When carcinogens are swallowed, the throat, larynx, and esophagus further become exposed to these toxins and irritants.  Cigarette and cigar smokers appear to swallow similar amounts of carcinogens, resulting in approximately the same percentage of risk in developing oral and esophageal cancers.  

Research indicates that the health risks associated with both cigars and cigarettes may be reduced if the degree inhalation is adjusted.  Because most cigarette smokers tend to inhale deeply and smoke on a regular basis, they are at higher risk of developing cancer of the larynx. To get an idea of how inhalation of smoke relates to health risks, the National Cancer Institute tells us that the lung cancer risk of someone who smokes five cigars a day and inhales moderately has about the same risk as someone who someone who smokes one pack of cigarettes a day.

An individual looking to buy electronic cigarettes will likely spend somewhere between $75 and $150 to get started. As the industry grows and the product becomes more mainstreamed, it is likely that one will be able to find this product a lot more readily. The only thing that could sideline this product would be the FDA. Currently the FDA is taking the position that e cigarettes are new drugs and is actually seizing many shipments that come into the country. It remains to be seen if the FDA is within its rights to seize these shipments, and if the electronic cigarettes should actually be subject to clinical trials. As this issue works its way through both Federal and state courtrooms and numerous legislative bodies, hopefully the result will be the freedom of choice for people actually trying to take a step in the right direction.

It does not seem that the E cig thing has taken off very strongly, and I have not seen any situations where someone was using this thing in non smoking areas.
The "smoke" that is emitted is water... so there is not 2nd degree smoke.

Technically, yes, in most places you can. Its even the selling point of a couple different brands of ecigs.

But in practice, I find the answer is no. Most people dont know what ecigs are, so they dont even realize you arent actually smoking, even when you try to explain it. Some places specifically have laws about vapor as well as smoke (in my area several bars tried to push the smoking ban with hookah, since technically its not burning, only vaporizing.... as a result, vapor was added to the smoking bans, and ecigs actually do fall under a couple of the bans around here because of that).

I find its less hassle to just follow the public smoking bans. It draws less attention, and less drama. However, if there arent a whole lot of people around, I will use it. But I try to be discrete.

Would you try e-cigarettes?

I have (and it really does mimic smoking well), but they're not approved by the FDA (they say they are dangerous). I think that they're safe myself, the FDA's just after the tax $ that would be lost on cigs.

I do not like smoking. But e-cigarettes sound a lot healthier than nicotine inducers.

I want to try an "electronic cigarette", but which brand is a good value?

As I'm looking around, I'm discovering that there are a few DOZEN of those things on the market now! They even sell them at a local gas station! Some are $40-$50, others $170... do you get what you pay for? Have you tried one that you like? Thanks! Eric

I would check out some video reviews on youtube and read up on them at some forums.
Try : E-cigarette-forum.com or vapersforum.com there are others. You really want to find one that will fit your needs, finances, etc. So that would be the best way to go.

Forums are a great help as they always have sections for reviews, discount coupon information for different vendors and usually links to reputable vendors.

Personally, I like the 3 piece e-cigs though I've never been inclined to try the 2 piece ones as it seems a big waste to just throw out a working atomizer - but to each his own. For convenience I hear they are great.
