History Of Electronic Cigarettes

An Electronic Cigarette is a non-flammable smoking device which is commonly used in place of a tobacco cigarette. This device contains liquefied nicotine for authentic tobacco.

A Beijing-based company, SBT Co Ltd., along with a registered patent, developed the first Electronic Cigarette in the year 2003. The project was taken over by Ruyan in order to develop the technology to a further level. After successfully developing the technology, Ruyan absorbed SBT officially and the merged company was named as SBT Ruyan Technology and Development Co Ltd. The first electronic cigarette was sold by Ruyan in China in May 2004. The sales of the company increased steadily over the first three years of production.

This electronic device was exported to Europe in April 2006. The company Ruyan was launched officially at the Ruyan Overseas Promotion Conference in Austria. With the name of ‘electro fag', this product was successfully adapted by the European and United Kingdom markets. This technology drew huge media attention when the company, Reuters visited SBT RUYAN in Beijing in 2007. The president of the recently formed Electronic Cigarette Association, Matt Salmon said that the number of electronic cigarette users has been estimated to be 300,000 in October, 2009 as per the conducted survey results. But the actual number of users is far larger than the estimated figure.

The patent rights of electronic cigarette are solely owned by China. However, there are many trading companies which supply and distribute these devices to places all over the world. These products along with their refill and reusable components have a huge world wide market. These products have gained a lot of popularity since its release in the year 2003.

Though the purpose of inventing the electronic device is unknown, it is now widely used to curb the addiction to smoking. Hence, the electronic cigarette has traveled a long way from its invention to its current position.
