Although no one can forecast the future and truly know how long we will live, quitting smoking may give you the edge you need to live a longer and healthier life.</p>
<p>Your children wanting you to quit is seen as the second reason. Quitting tobacco products and smoking is actually one of the greatest things you could do for your family. You could be a role model to your children and your grandchildren; someone they would want to emulate. When an adult in the family does not smoke the children are much less apt to. If your children do not smoke as an adolescent or teenager they are much less apt to as an adult.</p>

<p>The majority of smokers want to quit and have tried to quit smoking in the past 12 months, but only around 1% of smokers who try to quit on their own successfully do so. That is because the relapse rate among them is very high. After trying to quit smoking two to three times, they become frustrated and start smoking even more. However, if given psychological counseling, the quit rate improves to 11%.</p>

<p>I did - it was hard, had to sit on my hands a lot.  Weirdly, every time I started craving I tried to substitute it with drinking water, and it worked.  Of course drinking the water helped remove the chemicals from my system, so that was a bonus too.</p>

<p>I have a friend who cuts herself. I also used to. Alright, first:</p>
<p>1. Figure out exactly why are you cutting yourself?</p>
<p>2. Find a way to make life more bearable, but it can't be something that will make it worse- like drugs. Find something to make life be<br />
happier.</p>
<p>3. Confide in someone. Get help. Even if you don't think or don't want it, you really should. People aren't going to think your crazy. If you don't want people to talk down to you or lecture you- tell them that immediately. But do get a therapist. Get a therapist you don't hate to. If you get one you hate that would just be bad, and you don't want that. </p>
<p>Whenever you feel like cutting yourself, just stop thinking about it- don't let your mind wander back to it. Distract yourself with anything that you can find. </p>
<p>As for stopping smoking cigarettes, it's another matter of just finding some way to distract yourself. Replace smoking cigarettes with something that won't hurt you. Like chew a lot of gum. </p>
<p>Also even if you hate yourself remind yourself that you really are a lot better than you think you are. Even if you think people don't care about you, they do, a few really do care. Even if you don't think so. I also agree with you very much about emo being a pile of bullsh*t.</p>
<p>You need to get some kind of professional help, get off Yahoo Answers and look into that.</p>

<p>I've been smoking now for two weeks. I'm able to quit whenever I want but the reason why I smoke is because if I get depressed I start to smoke. So I told myself that myabe it's better to start smoking because of my depression instead of drinking beer. So I bought a pack and I'm about to run out. Should I go out and buy some more. I have the will power to stop smoking altogehter but I get depressed sometimes during the week like at least four or three times a week and I want to know if smoking helps. And should I keep on smoking if it takes my mind off of my depression? I smoke cigarette's and I'm also a chain smoker. <p>I didn't realize I was addicted until I'd been smoking for 8 years and tried to quit when I was 22 and in my last year of college.  I couldn't quit, that's how I knew I was addicted.  Now I'm 25 and smoke about 30 a day.  Otherwise though I'm a pretty healthy guy ... and kind of nice looking too.</p>
<p>But anyway, at what point does someone know they're addicted?  My 17 year old cousin started smoking a few months ago and smokes about half a pack a day, he's worried he might be addicted -- he doesn't actually want to quit but wants to be able to quit when he does want to.

<p>It really is different for everyone. I smoked for 2 years, then I quit for 2 years and it was the easiest thing I'd ever done. Then I started smoking again about 5 years ago. I'm up-to 3 packs a day now and can't go more than 10 hours before I freak out.</p>

<p>I gave up smoking but I was not really aware of ten "non-health" related benefits until I started to jot them down - amazing how many people didn't quite spot the "non health" criteria.</p>
<p>1. Less Money wasted<br />
2. Not having to organise ciggy runs overseas<br />
3.Not having to go to the garage at 4am when you run out anyway<br />
4.Body smells nicer<br />
5.Clothes smell nicer<br />
6.Not as many "hot rock" burns as I hardle ever smoke pot now<br />
7.House is fresher<br />
8.Ceilings and walls no longer go yellow<br />
9. Light curtains do not get nasty/orangy tint anymore<br />
10. Car is no longer a ghastly mess of cellophane, cig ends and ash</p>
<p>One for luck: Most friends are non-smokers - so is easier</p>
<p>ps: In England, slang for a cigarette is a fa6 - which means something a bit different over the pond - which I guess is why my "fa6-run" - turned into asterisks!</p>
