Anytime you search the internet for "Stop Smoking Help", you get the usual suspects. You'll find a government website that overwhelms you with information; you'll also get sites trying to sell electronic cigarettes (even though they're not supposed to be marketed as stop smoking aids); you'll also discover other sites selling hypnosis, acupuncture or some kind of a shot or some fancy liquid that has who-knows-what in it. Are there any sites out there that just tell the truth in a way that is easy to understand? I believe there are a couple, but we'll get to that later.

What are the scientifically studied ways to stop smoking, those ways that have unbiased published research backing up their claims? It is one thing to say, "take our product and we guarantee success", but if there's no science to back those claims, then you really have to question it. Anyone can claim success, but how many can show you their records? So lets begin.

1) Chantix

Chantix is a fairly new product that boasts a pretty good success percentage. It is somewhere around 20%. The makers describe it as more of a program, rather than a simple "pill" for stop smoking.

2) Zyban (Bupropion)

Zyban is an anti-depressant which has some anti-smoking properties. It also works by addressing some of the depression found in smokers.

3) Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Found in this category are things like gum/lozenges, the patch, nasal sprays, and inhalers. These have roughly the same success rate as Zyban.

4) Cold Turkey

Here the person just decides to quit all on their own without any help. Its success rate is the smallest of any of the above listed. Cold turkey really is the hardest method for people, because it requires nothing but will power. This is why people who quit cold turkey, have the highest relapse rate.

5) Hypnosis/Acupuncture

These two methods, although not considered frontline or traditional methods, do work for some people. However, the success rate isn't what you might expect. Most experts agree the success rates are similar to quitting cold turkey.

Here they are, essentially, five proven ways to stop smoking as found in the medical literature. However, there is one more method that can dramatically improve these success rates. In fact, this one method has roughly a 20+% success rate when used all by itself, as published in the scientific literature. Before you discount these words as someone trying to sell you something, realize that it isn't stored on shelves and isn't delivered on brown UPS trucks. This should tell you right away, that it's not some kind of product described in my opening.

So what is it then? Well for that information, you would want to get some information on stop smoking aids. Remember, when you are searching for "Stop smoking help" on the internet, there is one great site that provides unbiased information on this and all the stop smoking aids available. It doesn't sell anything other than information, which it gives away for free.

Everybody hates flat tires. We have all been caught in the rain or on a dark night with a flat. Even on a sunny afternoon there will be frustration.

Under-inflation is the leading cause of premature tire wear and tire failure.

Under-inflation allows tire sidewalls to flex, cracking the rubber at the flex point. The constant flexing causes tires to run hot, shortening tire life and inviting a blowout.

Deformation of the tread mass and sidewalls of under-inflated tires uses energy, lowering gas mileage.

Many people take tires for granted, noticing them only when something goes wrong. Studies show that 30 percent of private vehicles on the road have one or more tires at least 8 psi below specification. Despite the publicity generated by the Ford Explorer/Firestone tire SUV rollover scandal, millions of people have no idea how much air is in their tires.

Tires slowly lose air through microscopic holes in the sidewall. A proposed remedy involves filling tires with nitrogen, which seeps out more slowly. While this is not a new idea, race cars and aircraft have used nitrogen in tires for years, the concept as applied to the average mass-market automobile is highly controversial.

Proponents, mostly manufacturers of compressed nitrogen equipment, have been countered by naysayers. Scientific terminology has been bandied about by both sides in an area where real studies are difficult at best.

But the debate has centered on technical issues surrounding the benefits of nitrogen tire filling. The real question is just how much is this service worth.

Do the benefits of nitrogen in ordinary passenger car tires outweigh the cost?

Well, that depends on the cost.

When the idea of filling car tires with nitrogen was first introduced, tire retailers provided it as a free service for buyers. Some, notably Costco Wholesale, are still doing this.

But the idea soon morphed into a marketing fad. Tire stores discovered long ago that they could add charges for items that used to be standard, like balancing and valve stems.

So nitrogen filling was a perfect upselling item: invisible, intangible. Other than the snazzy green valve caps that accompany the nitrogen fill, how would a customer even know what was actually in their tires?

Starting with nominal charges of $3 per tire, the price was gradually raised to as much as $60 for four tires and a spare. Some offered "lifetime" free refills as justification for higher prices.

Car dealers noticed, and some jumped of the nitro-tire bandwagon. They put N-filled tires on the new-car additional dealer markup sticker, with a posted price of up to $300.

The dealer's cost is under $10, including labor.

Some dealers, at import stores with very high demand, are putting the eye-catching green valve stem caps on every car in inventory. Additional markup stickers for "VIN etch" or "spray-on fabric protectant" are a good reason to walk away from a dealership. But large additional markup for nitrogen filled tires is a reason to RUN!

The prices of nitrogen generators have been falling rapidly, to the well under-$10K area for small scale commercial applications. These machines can fill tires for as little as $.25.

This means the service could be provided by coin-operated machines similar to the air dispensers now in use.

Consumers would be better off learning to check tire pressure regularly, as NHTSA says less than 60% of American drivers do. Nitrogen may save gas, but it does not mean never having to check your tires

The majority of air pressure loss in tires is not through the sidewall. Road hazards, curb rubbing, and tire changing tools make small imperfections in rims, where poorly seated tire beads allow leaks. The rubber seal around valve stems is another culprit.

A cigarette-lighter 12-Volt compatible portable air compressor costs $10 at Wal-Mart, and an air pressure gauge as little as $3. Tire pressure monitoring systems are standard on new cars now, some are very accurate.

Nitrogen is OK as a "free" service that tire retailers and dealers can use to add value for their customers. Lifetime refills are a marketing ploy giving customers a reason to return for upselling of higher margin products and services.

And it is quite conceivable that a nominal fee of $5-6 per tire could be justified by fuel savings.

But consumers should see through marketing fad upselling: just say no to overpriced Nitrogen.

Echinacea is a group of American coneflowers in the Family Asteraceae Compositae. There are nine species of the plant included in the genus. Three of these are typically seen in herbal preparations: Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia, and Echinacea pallida. Common preparations consist of freshly pressed or ethanolic extracts of the roots, leaves, and flowers as well as dried portions of the plants. E. purpurea is the most commonly used species, although it is often seen in combination with E. angustifolia. Echinacea was first used by Native Americans for treatment of many conditions. These included pain relief, cough and sore throat, fever, smallpox, mumps, measles, rheumatism, arthritis, and as an antidote for poisons and venoms. As early as 1762, Echinacea was mentioned for use on saddle sores on horses. Until 1885, no further study is documented in the literature.

That year marked the beginning of the rise of Echinacea into mainstream medicine. H.C.F. Meyer, a Nebraska physician, began promoting the product for conditions such as syphilis, hemorrhoids, and rabies, among many other claims. This same year the Lloyd Brothers pharmaceutical company was finally persuaded to produce and market an Echinacea product. They began producing a number of products containing Echinacea and had a great deal of success with their line of products. In a survey conducted on preference and use of phyto-pharmaceuticals early in the 20th century, 6000 physicians ranked Echinacea 11th overall out of a list of several hundred products. Antibiotics and the push for patentable medicines led to the fall of Echinacea and herbal medicine in the United States and Europe. In recent years, Echinacea has made a comeback in the United States and, in 2002, it was the second-bestselling herbal product.

Numerous forms of Echinacea are available in the United States. Dried herb and concentrated extracts in oral dosage forms make up the bulk of the products available. There are also available fresh, freeze-dried, and liquid alcoholic extracts, which come in a variety of forms including tablets, capsules, lozenges, liquids, teas, and salves. A good number of these products are combined with other herbs such as ginseng, goldenseal, and various other supplements to enhance the efficacy of Echinacea. Consumer Reports analyzed 19 different Echinacea products in its February 2004 issue to determine content and potency. As a primary standard they used the phenolic content as a measure of potency. The products varied with their phenolic content, some from bottle to bottle of the same manufacturer. Some of the combination products that were tested were found to have unacceptable lead levels according to California standards. Only three of the products were deemed to have adequate labeling with regards to precautions.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was done in 48 healthy patients Treatment was continued for 7 more days after the inoculation. They did not find a statistically significant decrease in the rate of infection. Because of the small sample size, power analysis did not detect any differences in the frequency and severity of the illness that ensued after inoculation. However, their findings did show a trend of reduced symptoms consistent with previous studies relative to prevention of upper respiratory infections.

In another study a single center, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial investigated the activity of Echinacea in humans for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes. The 1-year study involved 50 patients who were each given the product Echinaforce for 6 months and placebo for 6 months. The study found no statistically significant benefit in using Echinaforce vs placebo for frequently recurrent genital herpes.

Side effects that have been observed with administration of Echinacea are generally mild and uncommon. Infrequent adverse effects include abdominal upset, nausea, unpleasant taste, and dizziness.

Echinacea has been thought to have potential for liver toxicity because of the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and some authors have warned about its concurrent use with known hepatoxic drugs. The importance of this purported toxicity has been questioned, as Echinacea lacks the 1,2-unsaturated necrine ring system that is associated with the hepatoxicity of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. A case report describing a 41-year-old male who took Echinacea routinely at the start of influenza-like illness recalled taking it before each of four clinical episodes of erythema nodosum. These episodes lasted anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks and each time they resolved when the Echinacea was stopped. He was followed a year later and had not had any more recurrences of erythema nodosum. He had other bouts of intermittent influenza illness similar to the previous episodes, which he treated with Echinacea, but the patient was unwilling to rechallenge with Echinacea.

A 36-year-old patient started taking a combination of herbal products including Echinacea, and 2 weeks later she presented with generalized muscle weakness that limited her ambulation and ability to use her hands. After her serum electrolytes were corrected, her muscle weakness improved rapidly. She was diagnosed and treated for Sjögren's syndrome and her condition rapidly improved. The researchers suggested that her use of the immunostimulant Echinacea could have contributed to the activation of her autoimmune disease, which ultimately caused her severe metabolic disturbances.

In a prospective, controlled study, 206 women who reported use of Echinacea during their pregnancy were compared to a group of 206 women who were matched to the study group with regards to maternal age, alcohol, and cigarette use. In comparing the rates of major and minor malformation, it was found that there were no statistical differences in number of live births, spontaneous abortions, therapeutic abortions, or major malformations. This study suggests that use of Echinacea during organogenesis is not associated with any detectable increased risk for any major malformations. In a study of human sperm, Echinacea was found to inhibit the motility of the sperm only at high concentrations and after 24 hours. One potential effect of Echinacea is thought to be the inhibition of hyaluronidase activity. Another study of human sperm and oocytes showed that Echinacea at high concentrations had adverse effects on oocytes and suggested that Echinacea damages reproductive cells.

You have a drug addiction and can't quit. Now what? Don't despair; there's a way out. The trick is seeing your addiction differently - seeing it for what it really is.

Unemployable, Lonely, and Sick

Though taking your drug makes you feel good immediately, it makes you feel awful in the long run. For example, snorting cocaine will eventually cause health problems such as heart disease, heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, seizures, gastrointestinal problems, convulsions, nausea, blurred vision, chest pain, fever, muscle spasms, and coma. If you think that these health problems are bad, long-term cocaine snorting causes social problems such as lying, stealing, absenteeism at work, and sometimes even prostitution.

So basically, long-term cocaine use causes you unemployment due to your work absenteeism, loss of friends and family due to your lying and stealing, and sickness due to cocaine's damaging effects on your body. Cocaine ultimately transforms you into a loser - unemployable, lonely, and sick!

Wait a minute! Reading this article won't help you! Once done reading, you'll go back to snorting cocaine, smoking crack, shooting heroin, popping OxyContin, or whatever it is you do.

That's why I'm introducing a powerfully effective self-help intervention that you must do regularly. This self-help intervention is called Classical Conditioning. Simply put, Classical Conditioning consists of pairing a particular feeling with a particular event over and over again until they become automatically associated with each other.

Let's say that you have a cocaine addiction and want to quit. So instead of feeling good after snorting cocaine, you want to feel awful. What makes you feel awful? Electric shock? Okay, we'll use this.

So each time you snort cocaine, you give yourself a severe electric shock. You feel awful each time. Eventually, you'll automatically associate snorting cocaine with feeling awful - without the electric shock! Thus, curing yourself of cocaine addiction.

Nevertheless, electrically shocking yourself isn't socially acceptable and will attract unwanted attention. We need something more discreet. What's more discreet than the hidden thoughts inside your head? Can you use your thoughts to make yourself feel awful? Let's see.

You just snorted cocaine and want to make yourself feel awful for doing it. So you think, "By using cocaine, I'm making myself into a complete loser. I'm now becoming totally unemployable, lonely, and sick. Worthless. Useless. A hopeless piece of crap. Good for nothing." How do you feel? Awful, right?

So if you think along these lines each time you snort cocaine, you'll eventually learn to associate snorting cocaine with feeling awful - without using your thoughts to make yourself feel awful! Thus, curing yourself of cocaine addiction.

Currently, drug addiction is seen as self-destructive behavior maintained by the reward of taking a drug (feeling good) and the punishment of abstaining from it (withdrawal symptoms). Given this, a scientific intervention such as Classical Conditioning can effectively cure it.
